“ In exploring the concept of “seeking shelter”, I considered what this might mean under different circumstances. From my experiences of childhood I am first reminded of how vulnerable I was to people in positions of power, how protection was only to be found within myself once I became an adult.

Through ancestral history I am reminded of the migratory patterns of my people across Turtle Island, the connections found in our languages and stories that existed long before borders. I am reminded of my unknown ancestors who sought freedom and shelter by breaking the law and running. In this modern day, the suffering of the unhoused, our disconnected nature that allows so many to be pushed to the edges of society.

Do we turn away from the suffering of others in order to preserve ourselves? Does looking away preserve our humanity? How do we seek shelter within ourselves? ”
